Hi, I'm new to this board, and I'm very happy to have found it.

I am 52 with fairly good skin for my age, but I have a few light brown sun/age spots (small freckle-sized) and some fine lines. I have very sensitive skin, which is going to be a problem for me in combatting these issues, I realize.

In addition, I have gained a lot of weight in the last several years and need to lose at least some of it for both appearance and health reasons. As a result of my anticipated weight loss, I am concerned about possible loss of skin firmness and elasticity and would like to ward it off now.

To address the spots and fine lines, I have already tried a serum containing ascorbyl palmitate and found it irritating--enough so that I had to discontinue using it. (It is possible, of course, that other ingredients in the product caused the adverse reaction.) I also experience sensitivity to dimethicone and other silicone derivatives, although I can tolerate them in small doses.

Is there any type of product suitable for sensitive skin that will help lighten age spots and minimize the appearance of fine lines? (I would not be comfortable using a product containing hydroquinine because of the controversy associated with it.) Is there anything to help maintain firmness?

Thank you.

There are prodcuts now in the market which are really effective. I could give you some advice on that but you pointed out about your sensitive skin. I think freckles could be lessened if you limit your exposure to the sun. Maybe lots of water could also help. I think it is best to consult a dermatologist about your issue because it is really hard just buying something which may not be suitable for you.

Thank you, smoothskin and lisa, for your helpful replies.

I will definitely look into Arbonne products and will start using a higher SPF product on my face.

For the light spots, do IPL with someone that specializes in treating brown spots.

For the faint lines, only retinoids can help but won't eliminated them especially if these are motion wrinkles aroudn the eyes - combine with Botox for those. Anything else is useless time and money wasting fluff. I have very sensitive skin and what I do is rotate retinoids:

- 1 night Retin-A cream or Reatin-A micro or Isotrex gel (topical accutane, not retin A)
- 2-3 nights Avene Eluage (retinaldehyde)

Retin A is effective but tends to be irritating to most people, less irritating is the slow release Retin A micro form. Isotrex is less irritating since it requires a conversion step to retin A in the skin which slows the release rate naturally.

Retinaldehyde is the skin restoring treatment, it is the ONLY retinoid that does not cause redness, on the contrary it decreases it and that is confirmed by studies and my personal experience with it. Retinaldehyde only by itself is not very effective in anything more than just evening out skin color, which for some people like me is a lot. I use the other stronger retinoids to achieve extra effect.
