undereye puffiness

I am in my early 20s and have really bad undereye puffiness. I have dark diagonial puffiness under both eyes. They are very noticable and have a swollen look. I've had this problem for a couple years, but it seems to be getting a little worse than better. No matter how much sleep I get or what I eat they are the same.

Its too the point I dont feel comfortable being around people, is there any solution for this problem?

Try simple things first: sleeping on your back, avoiding alcohol and not drinking much fluid 3-4 hours before going to bed. If that doesn't work, you may want to rule out any medical problems that could cause facial edema.

I sleep on my back, dont drink alcohol, and dont drink 3-4 hours before bed. I've tried everything and its always there.

What kind of medical problems could cause this?

Certain medical conditions can predispose one to puffiness and other types of edema, including as kidney problems, hypothyrodism, electrolyte embalances, etc. However, many people have puffiness for no apparent reason, i.e. puffiness does not neccessarily mean an underlying medical problem. If you have also edema (swelling) of ankles, this would be a good reason to talk to your doc about this.

Late nights, allergies, high salt intake , stress etc can cause puffy eyes. Try out some of these at home .
Apply chilled cucumber slices over and under-eye areas and relax. Leave it on for 20 mintues. Gently rub the slices over and under-eye areas, and then wash off. The natural moisture from the cucumber acts like a healing tonic. You can apply cotton wool soaked in rose water or saline solution on the puffy areas .After you wake up put cold tap water or a mixture of cold water and ice cubes in a large bowl or tub. Splash your face for up to 5 minutes with the water. See if these help.

Also, you can do lymph drainage massage to yourself. I do not know how to tell you how to do it--maybe someone here knows, or you can google it. Anyways, I had a friend who has serious puffiness and an aethetician taught her how to do the massage. My friend absolutely raves about how well it works. Somehow you move the fluid away from under the eye and into the lymph system.

I also heard to keep a Tablespoon in the fridge or maybe a teaspoon :oops: it's the perfect size to put on your eye nice and cold for a few minutes, maybe it's two spoons, one for each eye. Anyway it sounded good!

Don't keep that spoon it in the freezer, or you will get a freeze-burn.

I'm no Dr...but I've had this problem for years. One reason could be dehydration (apparently one is prone to retain water when one does not get enough)..so I would try drinking more..only space it throughout the day.
I also got tired of trying different creams that really didn't work...but what does work best and quickest for me are tea bags (moistened with cold water).10 to 20 min should do the trick. Whatever kind of tea you use...make sure it has caffeine in it. This should help the puffiness go down so that you're not stuck with those eyes all day.
And also...if you wear contacts...eye irritation could be a contributing factor.

Yes, caffeine is a known method for reducing puffiness and is used in some eye creams. Cool tea bags may work by the combined action of cold and caffeine.

I've always been confused by the teabag method. It just feels so unpleasant to lie there with wet things on my face for too long. Does it really work better than, say, adding an extra hour of sleep every night and not drinking alcohol right before bed?

Not drinking and extra sleep are prevention methods, if you do that, you may not need the tea bags. On the other hand, if you already have puffiness in the morning, the tea bags is one of your possible options.

My friend has told me to put the pillow a little bit higher so that the water won't stay at the eye area while we are sleeping.
