This is an interesting article on ala because it shows it to have oxidant activity by increasing ROS production in the mitochondria. This is interesting because it is in vivo and not an in vitro test for antioxidant activity.

Interesting data. The problem is that this model is so different from topical application to the skin that you cannot generalize or extrapolate. For example, vitamin C can be shown to be an antioxidant or prooxidant depending on the model.

I thought about that. The main generator of ros is the mitochondria, which makes sense given its physiological role and I’d be willing to bet that mitochondrial activity is significantly less in adipocytes than in muscle tissue so extrapolating this study to the skin may be hasty. I'm still at a loss when it comes to clear-cut answers as to drastically increasing dietary and supplemental antioxidants as an anti-aging strategy. Perhaps moderation is best in this case but that is such a cop-out answer.
