In his latest book(The Perricone Promise), Dr. Perricone states that neuropeptides are the biggest breakthrough in anti-aging skincare that he's seen in over 20 years. But he says not to confuse "neuropeptides" with pentapeptides". So what is the diffference between neuropeptides and pentapeptides? I know that neuropeptides are produced naturally in the body, but what warrants Dr. Perricone to rate topical neuropeptides so high in terms of skin rejuvenation? He actually charges over $500 for his neuropeptide cream. Has anyone had the courage to try it and see the results yet?

This is like comparing apples and oranges. Neuropeptide is a pertide with some action upon nerve fibers. Pentapeptide is any peptide consisting of five amino acids. I am sure one can find some neuropeptides that are pentapeptides. One can sort of guess what he meant but the wording is quite inaccurate. I would say that the author owes his readers some accuracy, even if he thinks they won't be able to tell the diffence. It also possible that he forgot some of his biochemistry. It's just one course way back in med school after all...

However, I may be unfair to Dr. Perricone: I don't have his book and it is possible that your quote was inaccurate rather than his statement.

Actually Dr. Perricone does(in his book ) say everything that I stated in my initial post. He does state that neuropeptides are the biggest breakthrough that he's seen in the last 20 years(in terms of anti-aging skincare). And he does say to be careful not to confuse "neuropeptides" with the "pentapeptides" found in some skin care products, but he doesn't elucidate or elaborate on that. That's all he says about pentapeptides. So he is leading the reader to think that pentapeptides will not have the same beneficial effects as neuropeptides. But if some neuropeptides are actually pentapeptides, then Dr. Perricone should explain this further, rather than just expecting the reader to rely on blind acceptance. I'm not putting down Dr. Perricone at all, because although I'm not a big fan of his "products", I think he has a lot of really useful info in his "books", even though I don't blindly accept everything he says. But he seems to be the only one focusing on the topical application of neuropeptides at this point(unless the neuropeptides he's refering to are actually pentapeptides), so I just wanted to clarify this. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has tried his $500+ neuropeptide cream.

The primary role of neuropeptides in skin care so far has been [supposedly] via inducing local relaxation. By pentapeptides he probably meant, palmitoyl pentapeptide-3, a procollagen 1 fragment (belonging to so-called matrikines), whose role is to increase the synthesis of dermal matrix, particularly collgen. How reliably both classes of peptides works remains to be seem, but their purported function is actually complimentary, there is no need to choose one over the other.
