|

How dangerous are tanning beds? My friends and I are planning to get some tan the quickest way before we head for Mexico two weeks from now. But since it's our first time to do so, we've conducted a sort of research for its advantages and disadvantages. Well, most of the articles we've read say that we can get skin cancer from it, and we don't want that to happen. Can someone enlighten us please about this? |

Hi,
It is believed in the skin care community that any tanning is damaging to skin. Self-tanners and bronzers are believed to be very safe, however, they will not prevent sunburn from sun exposure.
Daily sunscreen to all exposed areas is cruial.

I just had surgery for melanoma. I had a very dark, almost black otherwise normal looking mole, just came up within the last few months. I now am the proud owner of a 4 inch scar on my back. Also had 2 lymph nodes removed. And yes, I was a lifelong indoor-outdoor tanner. It was more on my side than my back , and the only way i'd get sun on that spot was when I'd lay on my side in the tanning bed. |

I'm very sorry to hear about melanoma. That is a very scary diagnosis. How old are you?

I found out the day after my 39th birthday, August 10 2006. Everything is ok now, I dont need any further treatment. But I cant help but blame myself for this. All the research Ive done has sated most UV damage is done by the time people are out of puberty. Even if you dont see immediate damage , it takes years for the damage to show up. If anyone has ANY questionable moles or freckles they should get them checked out. |

I never know what to say in these situations that means how I feel. Just picture me with red eyeballs and a sniffly nose from crying. Best of luck with the others. |
