| I have read that scientists don't consider Salicylic Acid a true BHA, but it is "treated that way". What does that mean? If Salicylic Acid is not a true BHA, then what would be a true BHA? Are the other BHAs useful for the DIY skin care hobby? |

| Beta hydroxy acid, by definition, is an organic acid possessing a hydroxy group at the secods carbon counting from the carboxyl group. In that sense, salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid. However, in salicylic acid, the bond between the alpha and beta carbon is aromatic (part of benzene ring) rather than aliphatic (part of simple saturated carbon chain) as in most beta hydroxy acids. This makes salicylic acid a bit different from the majority of beta hydroxy acids. |
