What is the best anti-aging skin care regimen? I'm in my late 20's. What ingredients should I look for in morning cleansers, lotions, serums, evening cleanser, moisturizer, etc. Do I need something with Vitamin C and when do I apply it? Thanks! :D |

Hi there -
Unfortunately, there is not a single "best" regimen for antiaging. (I know, I know - not the answer you're looking for!) :)
There are some widely accepted practices, however...
I know many of you are sick of hearing me say this :) but first, you have to start with a solid foundation, no pun intended. This foundation should be based on Cleanse => Tone => Moisturize =>Protect. Caveat: these are general guidelines - certain skin may not require added moisturizer, for example.
Your regimen should use ingredients that are as gentle as possible and contain the fewest possible sensitizing ingredients (alcohol, abrasives, soap, harsh detergents, etc). You should also apply your skincare regimen as gently as possible - no scrubbing, rubbing, or wiping with abrasive cloths.
This will go a LONG way in helping your skin from prematurly aging.
There are TONS of antiaging products out there. If you want something that is proven effective in peer reviewed studies, you'll be basically restricted to Retin A or Renova. These are available only w/ perscription.
There are many products out there that have very positive clinical results that you can try. These will have different effects on different people - best advice - try one for about 6 weeks and if you like the results, stick with it or try something new. Don't give up on a treatment before about 6 weeks - it will take at least that long for the real results to show through (of course, keeping your C, T, M, P going the entire time).
For improvement and repair, I like Vitamin C treatments and products - try the Cellex C line - be careful it can be very pricey! You can try the Cellex C Advanced Serum as an addition to your daily regimen.
I am also a HUGE fan of AHA/glycolic lines - MD Forte has a nice selection of glycolics and are available at reasonable prices, though still not drugstore prices. You could try using their glycolic cleanser followed by their glycolic moisturizer - shoot for something in the lower AHA % range - I think 20-30% is too high for daily use. Look for the 8-12% range. They have series I, II, and III - with III being the most potent.
Remember one thing....no single product is going to be the best. Great skin comes from a healthy lifestyle and from a well organized daily skincare regimen (CTMP), not from a single best product.
Sorry for the long post! You caught me when I was feeling wordy... :)

As George says, there is probably no "best" skin-care
regimen or product.
However, there are certainly good and bad ingredients.
Be on the lookout for SLS (sodium laureth sulfate), not
because of the rumors that it can cause cancer, but because
it is an irritant that can harm your skin.
For anti-ageing, the latest news is that anti-oxidants are
beneficial, and many products include vitamins in their
list of ingredients.
I recommend a product line called Sense, not only because
I use it, but also because they do not include any possibly
harmful ingredients. I just don't want to take any chances.
Cheers,
Robert |

Hello, As stated in George's post, I don't understand the need for Toner. I thought Toner was an extra step to cleanse the skin and remove residue from make-up. Is it necessary for a male to use toner? If so, any recommendations? Thanks, Ken |

Good toner question, I get it all the time!
Toners are an important step in a skincare routine for men and women alike!
Toners will get rid of any impurities or residue left behind by your cleanser, its like a rinse cycle for your face. If you get a toner with AHA's (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, which are fruit acids) that will exfoliate (remove dead skin from) the surface, allowing your moisturizer to penetrate to the healthy skin cells in the lower levels of the epidermis.
Plus it will level out the PH in your skin and prepare your skin so that the rest of your products (treatments, and moisturizer) will work better.
Some toners contain refined alcohols to help control oil. Some have the AHAs to help with exfoliation, some just even out the PH with no other additives or preservatives, so be sure to get a toner that fits your skin type.
This past winter, Merle Norman actually came out with a really great Men's line!!
Foaming cleanser to break down dirt and oil, Post shave balm that helps heal cuts, and a light weight day time moisturizer.
And there are 4 Toners to choose from depending on your skin type: Clear Complexion Toner: acne treatment, contains bateria killing salicylic acid
AHA Toner Normal/Dry: good for normal skin or dryer skin.
AHA Toner Normal/Oily: good for oily skin, contains refined alcohols
Delicate Balance: great for sensitive skin, no added dyes, alcohols, fragrance, preservatives etc...
any other ?'s drop a line.....

Hi -
Here is a copy and paste straight from Arbonne's website. They have an excellent anti-aging face regimen that I recently started using myself and love.
I'd be happy to give you a free sample. You can contact me through my website at tracibentz.myarbonne.com.
Regardless if you use the product (I hope you'll at least try it), here's some information you may find helpful regarding key ingredients to look for in a good anti-aging product:
Quote: | Arbonne’s RE9® anti-aging elements were key in creating a patent-pending skin care system that worked for women. NutriMenC™ RE9® began with this same list of elements and was formulated using those that were appropriate and conducive to men’s skin care needs, including:
nanosphere technology
Nanospheres, infused with free radical-fighting antioxidant vitamins, penetrate deep into the skin to protect, condition and adjust to skin’s specific needs.
vitamin c, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate
A biologically-active form of vitamin C that helps support collagen, elastin and ground substance (the strength and elasticity of the skin).
stimu-tex®
A unique, plant-derived skin moisturizer that helps to improve the appearance of the skin’s epidermal lipid layer, and minimizes water loss.
alpha lipoic acid
A powerful antioxidant that penetrates skin quickly and absorbs into the skin’s cells.
alpha and beta hydroxy acids
Activates healthy cells while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
peptides
Improves skin’s roughness and lessens the appearance of wrinkle volume and wrinkle depth.

Aside from the self promotion in the above post, I have some serious issues with the information pasted. Just because it comes from a big company doesn't make it correct...at least, it is not presented clearly...
Quote: | alpha and beta hydroxy acids
Activates healthy cells while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. |
First, these are two totally different acids that do totallt different things. BHA is oil soluble and as such will penetrate the pore and help to regulate oil activity. It is used primarily for acne treatments.
AHA's will remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells.
Neither of these two acids "activate" anything. AHA's can help improve complexion, but mostly by making the skin surface smoother and can help even out the skin tone by removing layers of dead hyperpigmented skin. The above quote is just a bunch of meaningless words. If someone chooses to pitch products on an information site (except the Dr., of course) you should at least insist that they are giving you clear, correct info.
Quote: | peptides
Improves skin’s roughness and lessens the appearance of wrinkle volume and wrinkle depth. |
Well, first of all, there are dozens and dozens of different peptides and each has a very specific action when applied topically. Funny, this description is better suited for an AHA! To say that "Peptides" improve roughness and the appearance and depth of wrinkles means nothing without knowing what type of peptide it is.
Bad info is bad info no matter where it comes from. Someone should write Arbonne a note and tell them that this info (if it is, in fact, on their site) does nobody any good at all. |

Hi, George -
The information DID come straight from Arbonne's site.
The extent of "self promotion" is very minimal. I really did have my own remarkable experience with Arbonne's anti-aging product - noticable changes in my skin within a few days' time. It's exciting to have such good results - and there's nothing wrong with me sharing what has worked for me. Which is what I've done.
I didn't say "Come buy some," but instead just made the offer of sending samples in the event the person who raised the initial question was interested in trying the product.
Just wanted to clarify my position in this communication thread.

Little does everyone know that there IS a single best skincare regimine out there. You can take it or leave it, all I can do is share it with everyone! Go to pure water.page.tl and see for yourself. It's made from PURE WATER and it's just been launched in the US about a month ago. No body has heard of it yet because it's only word-of-mouth. Have Fun! |

Hi Optimistic,
I had to type in with a space in between it like this: pure(space) water.page.tl because of this spam stuff going on, it's rediculous. Sorry for that inconvenience. Just type it in all together. You should get it now. It should go thru, it always does for me. Go for it! |

At your age, I think the two best things you can do for your skin is find a vitamin C serum that you like and use a good sunscreen at all times! |

We should all be wary of guests who tout miracle products and attempt to post links to external websites (and complain that restrictions do not allow them to). That website is a complete hoax. |
