DR., HOW DOES THE USE OF ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS INCREASE THE RATE AT WHICH WE REACH THE HAYFLICK LIMIT? DO THESE ACIDS, WHEN APPLIED TOPICALLY CAUSE DERMAL FIBROBLAST PROLIFERATION?
I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY SKIN CARE REPS THAT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN, BUT WOULD PREFER AN UNBIASED VIEW. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. |

It depends no how far you go with exfoliation. If you only remove stratum corneum, fibroblasts that live in the dermis may be largely undisturbed. But if you damage parts of epidermis, the resultant inflammation accompanying healing response may reach into the dermis and increase the rate of proliferation of fibroblasts - it is well known that inflammation does that.
This topic is rather complicated because it is unclear to what dergree Hayflick limit exists in vivo (albeit it is well proven in tissues culture). For example, it seems that in vivo keratinocytes (epridermal cells) are less restricted by it than fibroblasts, possibly because they have a greater population of stem cells replenishing them -- which is understandable because epithelium has to renew itself all the time. |

I am curious -- are you saying that your skin care rep knew about Hayflick limit and was able to coherently explain why it is not a factor in exfoliation? It true, I am impressed regardless of whether she/he was right or not. |

A REP FOR A SKIN CARE COMPANY I AM LOOKING INTO( NOT YET A CUSTOMER OF), TOLD ME THAT AHA USE DOES NOT CAUSE DERMAL FIBROBLASTS TO DIVIDE AT AN INCREASED RATE AND THEREFORE COULD NOT INCREASE THE RATE AT WHICH WE REACH THE HAYFLICK LIMIT. THIS IS AS MUCH DETAIL AS SHE GAVE ME REGARDING THE SUBJECT: HOWEVER I HAVE ALSO READ FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES THAT IT DOES CAUSE INCREASED FIBROBLAST PROLIFERATION. SINCE NEITHER OF THESE SOURCES ARE NECESSARILY REPUTABLE, I HAVE BEEN HAVING DIFFICULTY FINDING AN ANSWER THAT IS BACKED BY RESEARCH. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO RESPOND TO MY ORIGINAL POST.
