I'm not sure that has been well studied. I suppose if you are on retin A and are not cereful about UV exposure, something like this might happen because of increased UV sensitivity and damage. Typically though, retinoids have the lightening effect, if any, on pigmentation. In fact, they are a part of some melasma treatment protocols - as far as I recall. |
If I were to take retin A for say 6 months, then stop completely, do you think my new epidermis would regain its normal UVA/B resistance? If so perhaps its worth steering clear of the sun for a few months post treatment.
Worst case scenario, the new retin A created skin tissue is permanently sensitive, in which case we should all factor that in when deciding to use retin A in the first place.
What do you think Dr T?

| My impression is that unless you overtreat with retinoids, sun sensitivity largely goes away if you stop. But not right away - it may take weeks or even months. |
