Dr Todorov ,

I use gamma oryzanol because it dissolves better in base cream than ferulic acid ..... does it have the same benefits as ferulic acid ?
does gamma oryzanol have the same UV filtering capabilities of Ferulic Acid ? tks

Neither of these ingredients can replace good sunscreen.

Gamma oryzanol is a mixture of ferulic acid esters. Like ferulic acid it has some UV absorbing and antioxidant capabilities. I think it's due to the ferulic acid moiety of those esters. Don't think the other moieties of those esters have significant UV absorbing capabilities. So you would need more gamma oryzanol than you would need ferulic acid.

Keep in mind that ferulic acid and/or gamma oryzanol are not strong UV blockers. Thery provide some photoprotection mainly because they are antioxidants and reaction to UV damage is mediated by free radicals. However, some of UV damage occurs directly, e.g. formation of thymine dimers. So, even if you use skin care with ferulic acid and/or gamma oryzanol you still need a good UVA+UVB sunscreen if you have any sun exposure.

Depends on how much of each ester is present in the gamma oryzanol. I guess you need about 3 to 4 times as much.

Ferulic acid and its esters do absorb UV. Ferulic acid is an approved UV absorber in Japan (up to 10%). And scientists have developed sunscreen based on ferulic acid (SoyScreen). As with most of these ingredients, they don't provide broad spectrum UV protection on their own.

Ferulic acid can be made more soluble by neutralizing it with sodium bicarbonate or another base to form a soluble salt.
