Dear Dr Torovov,
I have recently bought R-alpha lipoic acid, I've realized it says in small lettering D-form. What does this means?. Is this the form that is effective against inflamation?.
Thanks for your postings, they are very useful. |

D and R are the same thing. When an organic molecule has a chiral center, the molecule can be either D (dextro, “right”) or L (levo, “left”) this can be used interchangeably with R and S. For some reason chemists tend to use D and L for specific types of molecules (i.e. amino acids) and R and S for others, but it is all the same. R-ALA is the form produced by the body and consequently is stereospecific in its pharmacological activity. (1). A majority of the studies using ALA used the racemic form (50% R and 50% S) but it logical to assume that the R form will result in a significant greater pharmacological effect than a racemic mixture so R-ALA should be superior as an anti inflammatory. Some studies indicate that the S form has no biological activity and in fact my limit the beneficial effects of the R form (2,3). A racemic mixture is still beneficial but the pure R form should probably be used if possible (in my opinion).
