R-hydrolipoic acid is a metabolite of R-lipoic that is less stable on exposure to oxygen. It has not been studied in skin care, so I am not sure that result will be the same as with lipoic aicd.

That actually is a problem with R-ALA, it is extremely chemically unstable and reactive to light. One manufacturer told me that the bulk power needs to be shipped in refrigerated trucks to maintain stability. I can guarantee you that you will see less and less of the free base form of R-ALA and more salts. The problem with an R-ALA salt is that they may be poorly suited for topical application.

Chris, I assume you meant R-alpha-hydrolipoic acid as being rather unstable. R-alpha lipoic acid (R-ALA) is reasonably stable, about the same as S form or racemate.

I did. Thanks for the correction.
