In short, they are caused by valves in larger veins that leak whic allows blood to apply pressure backwards. You can't fix those valves, so spider veins usually come back after they are treated, but you can do things to make the treatments last longer. Pregnancy and weight gain are the most common causes of the spider veins, but family history can be a real problem too. For small spider veins, sclerotherapy and Nd YAG Laser treatment work the best. For larger veins, greater than 4mm, you ususally need surgery or Endo Vascular Laser Treatment (EVLT).
