It appears to be a matter of degree. Prudent, not too frequent and not too aggressive exfoliation does not seem to cause any short or long-term negative effects. However, overdoing it may cause chronic skin dryness, skin sensitivity and, theoretically, accelerate skin aging by pushing skin cells closer to the Hayflick limit of cell divisions. |

I agree with the Doc! Current clinical research on MDA shows that it CAN cummulatively lead to advancing the signs of aging. While it exfoliates dead skin cells, it also damages healthy ones, leading to an increase in free radical activity in the skin. Free radical damage = signs of aging. Our individual genetics play a big role in who will be effected more by this though, since some of us combat free radical activity better than others. A safer alternative is to use an enzymatic method of exfoliation...I personally love a the PBH Exfoliating Masque by Kara Vita, which exfoliates by use of a pineapple enzyme called Bromelin...it effectively exfoliates without damaging healthy cells and without increasing free radical activity. Personally, I wouldn't use MDA and just wait and see if it will increase the signs of aging...safer alternatives are available. |

I love microdermabrasion! You can see results usually after the first use but sometimes it takes a few uses. I can see a big difference in the texture and it has given me a youthful radiance I haven't seen in years! Don't be afraid to try it at least once and not all brands are expensive. Make sure that you get a brand that is reputable with years of clinical experience! |

I agree - I love microdermabrasion as well - it is safe and effective if used correctly and not overdone. You MUST make sure you use a product that is only natural with excellent ingredients and be careful what you put on your skin after doing the microdermabrasion. I use Microdermx and it is a superb product and works extremely well. |

My experience is that the nurse-esteticians that do procedures (I had one IPL) are in general totally clueless of general dermatology and about adjusting the settings of the aparatus based on their experience. In IPL they usually use the pre-programmed settings. Having the procedure done at a surgeon office is not a quarantee it will be done properly. They are more interested in your money than in your skin condition. If that wasn't the case then they would have offered a FREE series of test spots to adjust the settings according to your skin. Have you heard of that, cause I havent .... They know the procedure often doesn't work due to their incompetence, yet they are eager to get your money ....
Make them do a test spot with the same settings as the real procedure to make sure they don't scarr u again. |

I had gone to an esthetician that recommended microdermabrasion. She said she had been doing it for years and had a lot of experience.I followed her advice and came in for a treatment only to get my face wrecked! It is just sand blasting, which like that one writer said may help some things, but then damages good tissue as well. The good thing is I found someone else who uses ultra sound and now I am doing treatments with GREAT results. The old school of thought was to evidently strip the skin (which eventually breaks it down) and the new philosphy is to nourish and rebuild it, with out damaging it with sand blast treatments. I am thankful to have found out about ultra sound. |

Hi,
With microderm it is not my favorite procedure, I think other treatments are more effective.
With regard to the person providing your treatment, be cautious. I feel it is better to get treatments in a doctors office, by someone who has a license, lvn, rn md, np pa etc.
Make sure to discuss the products you use on your face. Be sure to ask if you should discontinue your products b4 or after the procedure.
Ask how many producedures the person has performed.
As what the "worst case scenario" could be. Complications can arise from things that seem very benign.
There are so many variables that most people don't know about, things need to be provided on an individual basis. Sometimes people feel like they are paying a lot of money and the staff "does not do anything" except "push a button," put on a liquid, give a cream etc.......You are paying for knowledge and judgment and experience.
I would not recommend that a receptionist do laser procedures on her friends.... Does that stuff happen, yes.
When I provide treatments (I'm licensed and trained) I ALWAYS tell people the TRUTH about side effects....
Be very careful and ask questions before you have a treatment.
I don't mean to sound like a "preacher" but I have seen things that have been harmful to people, and these incidents are accidents.

Then would you recommend staying away from the at-home microdermabrasion systems that are to be multiple times a week, or even daily? |

I am so sorry. I had microdermabration and it made my skin worse, definately does not do anything for scars. I reckon its all just a money making scam. |

I had microdermabrasion, a series of 6 sessions. Did it make a difference? Yes but a minute difference. Not a big difference. A year later...my fine lines are still there...and my acne scars are still there. Using a good skincare routine has actually helped more. |
