Glycolic acid peel - is this doing anything?

I ordered a 30% glycolic acid peel solution. I followed the instructions and used it for 2 minutes the first time, then 4 minutes a couple of weeks later. When the solution is on it stings but I did not experience the redness and flaking skin the instructions said to expect in the few days following the peel. My skin does not look any different. So does that mean it is not working? Should I try to leave it on longer? More frequently? I don't really want red flaking skin but I would like to know that all the stinging is worth it.
