Dr. T.
I have searched and searched for a sunscreen with Zcote that is not heavy and greasy feeling and that is not outrageously overpriced. I have yet to find one. I just read a review about Neutrogena pressed powder with SPF 30. The active ingredient is Titanium dioxide not Zinc oxide but I am assuming it is the next best thing.
I have melasma so it is very important to me to make sure my skin is protected.
Would it be wise to use the pressed powder as my sunscreen instead of the heavy, greasy, zinc oxide sunscreens or should I continue my search for a non-moisterizing matte sunscreen with z cote?
What would be the most effective sunscreen the makeup powder or the grease?
Thanks.....akelly |

Titanium dioxide is an acceptable sunscreen, although zinc oxide is a bit better. The problem with powders is they come off easily and more diffficult to apply in such a way as to provide uniform protection. Nonetheless powdered titanium dioxide is a satisfactory option if others don't work for you.

Eucerin Extra Protective facial lotion with SPF 30 has both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. |

I actually have looked into the Eucerin Extra Protective facial lotion with SPF 30. Have you used it? Does it feel thick and heavy? Does it leave a matte finish? I like the protection it offers plus moisterizes the skin for 24 hours. I have tried to buy it at Wal-Martand K-Mart but I can't find it. Where can I purchase it? |

unless you apply your powder heavily and evenly then regular sunscreen is the way to go....out of curiosity why are you specifically wanting z cote? there are some great sunscreens that offer a very light matte finish but they use parsol and other 'chemical' sunscreening agents..fyi..they are neutrogena ultra sheer sunscreen and coppertone 'endless summer'..they are silicone based so give you that light matte feel... |

I am specifically wanting z cote b/c Dr. T has said it is the best UVA blocker out there and also an aestitician I went to said it is the way to go regarding sunscreens. I like to use 24 hour moisterizer and then I would put a sunscreen on top (I am currently using skinseuticals) then I would put on my mineral makeup. After applying the moisterizer and then the sunscreen it would feel so heavy and the makeup brush would get all greasy from the sunscreen even if I waited 30 minutes to apply.
My sister happened to have the Eucerin SPF 30 Moisterizer sunblock and I tried it this moring and it was so nice. It was not heavy feeling at all the the makeup went on nicely. My main concern with a good sunscreen is to protect my skin and not allow my melasma to get worse. It seems like all the sunscreens I try are so THICK and HEAVY. I know that it is better to apply moisterizer and then a sunscreen but so far I feel like it searching for the Holy Grail....
Just our of curiosity Why is it better to not mix the moisterizer with a sunscreen? I am sure I read it before but can't remember....if it is really that big of difference I will continue my search...
However, I really like the Eucerin Moisterizer and SPF 30 one so far....
thanks for your reply |

I don't recall saying anything specifically about z cote. What I may have said was that zinc oxide is probably the best physical sunscreen around. And that remains my opinion. |

akelly,
he is definitely correct with it being the best physical blocker but there are chemical uva blockers that work very well also and don't have some of the pitfalls of the physical ones..such as their texture and often their whitish cast they can add to the skin..but if you are looking for a good moisturizing sunscreen check out www.paulaschoice.com she has a couple and they offer a generous amount of moisturizing with the quite effective sun protection...and if you are interested in products for melasma i know she has a couple of hydroquinone products(something like 'remarkably clear' lotion or something)..it really can get time consuming trying to layer too many products! |

I buy Eucerin at Rite Aid. It's also available at drugstore.com. I find that it absorbs really well and is not greasy like a lot of other spf 30 sun blocks I've tried. And it's fragrance free, good for sensitive skin, and reallyl inexpensive. Anytime I try something more expensive I always go back to Eucerin. |

I've read some reviews on DrugStore.com about the Eucerin SPF30. Since it contains physical sunblocks like ZnO2 and since the SPF is high, my guess is that it will give whitish cast on skin. Some of the reviews on DrugStore.com confirmed that. Is that what you observe? |

I find that it only gives a whitish cast if I apply too much and even then, if I just take the time to massage it in the whitish cast goes away. I am very fair skinned, though, so I don't know if that makes any difference. In any event, at least it's cheap enough so that if it doesn't work you won't waste too much cash. Also, when I've been unhappy with other face creams with high spf, I just use it up on by arms and chest. |
