I started using Retin-A in my 20's to keep my skin nice - it still looked great, just not as nice as it did. Looking back, I would not recommend Retin-A as a first treatment. There are so many more delicate treatments now that would be healthier. I am 33 now and I wonder if I did more harm than good (my skin still looks good, though). Even though I used very little product, I was always pink.(I am a white woman with pink undertones naturally) I used the harsh Obagi products with it and my face was constantly flaking and light pink. I had better results when I changed to alcohol free cleanser and toner. The benefit was that my skin was smooth and no wrinkles really formed because I was constantly taking off the top layer of dead skin. In reading Dr. Pericone's book, I see that I was torturing my face. I still use Retin-A around my eyes and forehead only at night, but I use Amine Complex Face lift all over first and follow with Phosphatidyl-E day and night. The face lift firms and gives me an even tone and the E gives me a dewy look and repairs my skin.

Conclusions
My advice would be, be careful and start young but start with gentle products.
