Skin Care Review: La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser

by Laura

Rating
Good

Benefits
Supremely gentle, non-drying, detergent-free cleanser

Drawbacks
Not a very effective makeup remover

Details
As a rosacea sufferer I am always on the lookout for skincare products that will not irritate my hypersensitive skin or cause flareups. The Dermo-Cleanser from La Roche-Posay's Toleriane line is the gentlest I have found to date. A creamy lotion that is free of dyes, fragrance, preservatives and other common irritants, it is meant to be massaged on the skin, then gently removed with a tissue or cotton pad. As a morning cleanser it works very well. As an evening cleanser, it's not ideal in that the gentle, detergent-free formula does little to remove makeup and sunscreen. Using a washcloth helps, but the friction from the cloth tends to irritate my skin so that I end up as red and inflamed as if I'd used a stronger cleanser containing sodium laureth sulfate or another detergent cleansing agent.

Also, while the Dermo-Cleanser is advertised as being appropriate for all skin types, people with oilier skin will likely find that it does not do an adequate job of removing excess surface oils. My skin is combination, with dryish cheeks and a somewhat oily T-zone, and I often feel that the Dermo-cleanser is too rich and hydrating for my nose and forehead in particular. It's great for my dry areas, though.

Conclusions
Highly recommended for dry/sensitive-skinned individuals who don't wear much makeup.
