Skin Care Review: NeoStrata 15 AHA

by Tadgh Smith

Rating
Satisfactory

Benefits
Used to reduce the appearance of Keratosis Pilaris. Made Skin much smoother.

Drawbacks
If applied after over vigorous exfoliation, caused stinging sensation.

Details
I have a skin condition called Keratosis Pilaris or "chicken skin". Patches of skin on my thighs and upper arms are covered in hundreds of tiny raised red dots. The red dots are actually the hair follicles which have become blocked and inflamed. The blockage of the follicle is caused by excessive production by the skin of the protein Keratin. The condition is thought to be at least partly genetic in origin and there is no cure, only treatment. Affected skin, looks pimply and is also rough to the touch. However, daily Application of AHA 15% rapidly improved the texture of the skin making it completely smooth to the touch. After a few days of treatment, if testing by touch alone it would be impossible to detect which areas of skin were affected by KP and which were not.

Unfortunately it did little or nothing to reduce and appearance of the red dots, which are caused by the irritation of the keratin plug acting deep in the follicle and well below the surface of the skin.

The AHA did cause painful stinging if used following too-vigorous exfoliation. So I recommend not using it after exfoliation.

Conclusions
Substantially improves the smoothness of Keratosis Pilaris affected skin.
