Skin Care Review: TCA Peel

by J. Garrett, Waldorf, MD USA

Rating
Excellent

Benefits
Fast, easy, little or no discomfort and REALLY WORKS

Drawbacks
Some "downtime" due to peeling skin

Details
I am 45 years old and my skin is oily and not particularly sensitive. I had lots of age/sun spots and freckles. First, you MUST do a patch test so there are no surprises. When I did a patch test with the 12.5% TCA solution, nothing at all happened. I wrote to the owner of makeupartistschoice and she said actually that this was very good because that showed I was not overly sensitive and when applied over a larger area the results would show.

(I started only with my forehead so my hair would cover it if it was a disaster (which is wasn't), then I did my jawline/chin area and then after that peeled I did my nose and cheeks. Now that I have some experience I would just go ahead and do my whole face.)

Anyway....She was right....there is some initial burning but nothing really bad. The peel neutralizes itself after a few minutes so no need to really time it. The skin will be slightly red for a few hours. The next day all looks normal, then about the third day you notice the skin getting very tight and crinkly looking....like you had aged 50 years overnight but NOT TO WORRY....the next day the peeling will start and all your spots and little nasties will go with them!

I would apply this on a Wednesday so most of the peeling takes place over the weekend. Remember that in order for you to have good results the peel has to be strong enough to attain the crinkly dry 1000 year old mummy look. This may be different strengths for different people. The TCA can be diluted with water...

I noticed a dramatic decrease in the freckling/spotting and my entire face is just much smoother and nicer looking. I repeated the peel with the 18% solution a few weeks later. YOu can also "spot peel" for stubborn spots that are still there after the peel...I did this to a couple of spots and was very happy to see them dry up and peel off!

I am so happy to find something that is cheap and do-it-yourself and that actually works! By the way, this is the same stuff as the Obagi peel without the blue dye.

Conclusions
This peel is easily done by anyone who can follow simple directions.
