My pores were temporarily much smaller, so initially my skin looked much smoother.
Drawbacks
Expense and number of trips to the doctor.

I had the procedure to lighten sun damage spots and most of them are gone. On the downside it required two weeks to recover and 4 trips back for Dr. Sarnoff to check results. (I was charged extra for all but one visit) In the end she recommended that I use a lightening cream for the spots that were still there! I could have done the same with skin lightening creams in the first place but it would have taken a lot longer. My pores are back to their old size, so there was no permanent benefit there.
Conclusions
Take the slower, but much less expensive route to lighten sun damage.
