Diet Tip: Taming Chocolate Addiction

submitted by Debra Wattingdon, Toronto, Canada

I realized I was a chocolate addict over twenty years ago when I found myself mentally checking my supply before I went to bed to be sure I had an adequate stash for my morning tea. At that time I could eat four chocolate bars a day.

Rarely does a day go by that I am not eating sugary things. While I know that this is not good for my health, it is an addiction, it helps me get through the day -- maybe because it provides a sense of receiving a "treat" or because of a genetic predisposition to this addiction. However, I have found that the more that I eat sugary things the more I crave them, and soon I am subject to yeast infections and hypoglycemia.

My tip to other chocolate addicts is to insist on the highest quality chocolate possible. Now that Lindor 90% Dark Chocolate bars are widely available in drug stores it is much easier to scratch that chocolate itch without going overboard. The stuff is so rich that it is next to impossible to consume more than 4 squares in one sitting. This chocolate contains anti-oxidants and lower sugar content than the regular Cadbury stuff, and is cost-effective because less is consumed...
