Skin Care Tip: Dry Exfoliation

submitted by Cheryl Bryant Rushing, L.E., Scottsdale, AZ United States

Tip description / details:
Dry Exfoliation is a method I developed in 1988 while incorporating alpha-hydroxy acids, tretenion and topical vitamin C in my skin care regime. The rapid cellular turnover often made my complexion look dull, dry and (yikes!) old. Scrubs, buf pufs, wash cloths just couldn't take off the accumulating epidermal tissue. It occured to me that perhaps one reason men looked younger was because they shaved everyday, thereby exfoliating. After experimenting with many different techniques and razors I felt ready to use this procedure on my clients. After nineteen years of personally doing Dry Exfoliation, using it in my practice and teaching clients to do at home I can say with complete confidence it is the single most effective skin care treatment I have ever seen in over 40 years as a professional master aesthetician.

Ingredients:
disposable razors, baby powder, mild soap, cotton pads, packages of "Tinkle" (available at Ulta.com), Aquaphor, rosewater and glycerine (generic formula manufactured by most drugstores)

How to prepare:
Cleanse skin throughly of make-up with a creamy cleanser and washcloth. Wash face with a mild soap, rinse and allow to dry until it is tight. (anywhere from 2-10 minutes) Apply a thin film of baby powder with a cotton a pad to complexion, removing excess powder as you go. Now you're ready to Dry Exfoliate!

How to use:
Begin with a new disposable razor and shave the face in the direction of the hair growth. The idea is to get the hair "out of the way." Go slowly, do small sections at a time and hold each section taut as you go. Shake razor regularly to keep it clean. Once finished, pick up a Tinkle and do the same thing. However this time you may scrape the skin in any direction. One or two passes will tell you if the direction is removing dead skin cells. Hold the blade at a 45 degree angle and move in short quick waves. You will be able to see the skin lift off as you proceed. Go over each area in several different directions until you see a 'sheen'on the skin and it feels smooth. REMEMBER, GO SLOWLY, DO SMALL SECTIONS AT A TIME AND HOLD THE SKIN TAUT!! When you are finished, rinse the face well with warm water, pat dry lightly and apply glycerine and rosewater on cotton pad to skin. The pour some glycerine and rosewater into your hands and massage your face with it until it absorbs. You can do this step several times, the skin literally drinks it in. Seal the skin by patting some Aquaphor you've warmed up in your hands and press onto complexion.

Results (observed by submitter):
Immediate relief from dehydration, surface dryness, fine line wrinkling, especially around eyes and lips. Easing of deeper gesture lines. Skin looks translucent, vibrant, poreless with a healthy sheen. Feels beyond belief soft. Bonus: Skin care products work more effectively because they aren't fighting to get through saran wrap like dead tissue. Faster results from anti-aging products. CAUTION!! If using tretenion, alpha-hydroxy, vitamin C or idebenone, wait 72 hours before resuming. Adding a little generic cream hydrocortisone to your moisturizer will relieve any tenderness or possible irritation during this time. REMEMBER, GO SLOWLY, TAKE YOUR TIME, DO SMALL AREAS AND HOLD THE SKIN TAUT. Your friends will think you spent $$$$ on some lasar treatment!!!

Costs involved:
$5.00-15.00
