Weight Loss Tip: Balancing carbs, fat and protein

submitted by Reid

Regarding weight control, I've found that balancing carbs, fat, and protein (per, for example, The Schwarzbein Principle and The South Beach Diet) really works. For years I'd followed a low-fat, high-carb diet, including lots of fruits and yogurt. While this, along with exercise, did help control my weight, as the years passed (and hormones changed) I found I had to work harder and harder to avoid getting fat, especially around the waist. I also found myself craving carbs, and though I mostly avoided sugar, I'd binge on things like fruit and yogurt and rice cakes--healthy foods, but I ate enormous quantities. Over the last year or so, however, I began learning that excessive carbs, not fat, cause weight gain as well as cravings, low energy, and depression--all symptoms I'd been struggling with. Cautiously I began cutting back on fruit and other simple carbs and adding more healthy fats and protein to my diet. And I'm finding that, sure enough, the cravings are abating, I have more energy and less depression, and my weight is much easier to control.
