Skin Care Review: Proactiv

by Caroline, new york, NY usa

Rating
Good

Benefits
clears up blemishes and reduces onset of new ones

Drawbacks
bleaches towels and clothing

Details
I began using the Proactiv 3-part system three months ago. My skin is much clearer and seems more balanced. I am mid-30's and my blemish-prone complexion had not cleared up since adolescence. My complaint was chronic but mild blemish problems, so I can't respond to Proactiv's effectiveness for those with truly severe acne. I use the program as recommended in the literature -- cleanser, toner, repairing lotion (only at night), and sulfur mask every two or three days. I use my own moisturizer, heavier or lighter depending on the weather.

During the first weeks I experienced some "comedones" - white bumps beneath the skin, but not usual "whiteheads." I tried to be patient, despite years of picking at my skin, and lo and behold, they did go away. I have not had a real breakout since then.

I read many online reviews of Proactiv before trying it; it does seem that it might be better suited to fair, Northern European complexions. There seem to be some African-Americans who have had good benefits, but I read several reviews from Latina women who experienced adverse reactions.

If the system works for you, the price ends up being approx. $40 every eight or ten weeks, more or less, which is cheaper than buying products that don't work and then tossing them out. You can also change the frequency of shipping or the products which come in your package, which is helpful.

Conclusions
Be sure you're not allergic to benzoyl peroxide before starting. Proactiv does work!

Price (paid by reviewer)
$39 - $59, depending
