Skin Care Review: Proactiv

by Sally, WA USA

Rating
Adverse Effects

Benefits
High quality ingredients

Drawbacks
Too many steps, extremely harsh

Details
I never had skin problems until I reached my early 20s. I would even often sleep with makeup on and had no problems whatsoever. I now have acne along my jawline and have tried many products with no real success. My friend had good results with Proactiv, but never had acne, just minor breakouts. She still breaks out occasionally.

I tried Proactiv because of this and it was terrible for me. It dried out my skin to the point it would start peeling. I would have to scrub my face right when I got home from work because the skin would be peeling and looking horrible. I really saw no improvement whatsoever as a result of using Proactiv.

I tried it for about 2 months, having to cut down to using it just once a day because of how much it dried out my skin. I would often skip the second step of the astringent because it was too drying. I would also have to add another moisturizer because my skin got so dry.

My skin is its worst now. It is very irritated and itchy. I stopped using Proactive about a month ago. I will occasionally use the lotion in hopes it will work, but nothing really does.

I truly believe my problem is hormone-related so I am seeing a dermatologist in a week. I am hoping to get on accutane or something that will work with my hormones and not dry out my skin.

I must say, though, that the Proactiv did soften my skin up a bit in my non-problem areas. But I feel my skin is no better at all because of Proactiv.

Conclusions
I think it works for some, but not me. Gotta try it to find out.
