Skin Care Review: Spironolactone (Spirotone) 150mg/day

by Jennifer W., Salt Lake City, UT USA

Rating
Excellent

Benefits
This is by far the best thing I have used for hormonal acne.

Drawbacks
The anti--androgen effect has lowered my sex drive and changed my monthly cycle.

Details
I am 29 years old, and I have spent over 10 years seeking an acne cure--my sister took Accutane, and I would probably have as well if I had not been trying Ortho Tri-cyclen, Diane-35,low-carb dieting, and a variety of topical remedies. Spironolactone is the best of all these. People tell me all the time how nice my skin is now--it is completely clear, whereas I used to have one or two deep cysts and several smaller zits on any given day. Spironolactone also seems to reduce facial hair somewhat--it is finer and grows more slowly. I knew my acne was caused by hormones, and that the best way to get rid of it was something that affected my system on that level. The good thing about spironolactone is that it works on a hormonal level, but doesn't have as many bad side effects as the Pill (especially Diane-35). I used Diane-35 for 3 years, it cleared up my skin pretty well, but it gave me melasma, nail fungus, and constant hunger. Those things have gone away since I changed to spironolactone. My sex drive is still low, like it was on Diane-35, but its livable. Spironolactone has also made my monthly cycle into a 18-day cycle. I don't think this happens to everyone though. I have been taking spiro for over a year, and am extremely happy with it. I will continue taking it until (maybe when I am 60) I finally don't get zits anymore!

Conclusions
Please try this for a few months if you are a woman with hormonal acne.
