Skin Care Review: Roche Roaccutane

by Hazel, Wellington, New Zealand

Rating
Satisfactory

Benefits
Cleared up my acne, made my skin much less oily (also my hair became much less oily

Drawbacks
I had to be more careful about wearing sunblock, had a lot of skin peeling

Details
I took two course of Roaccutane during high school, one when I was thirteen and one when I was sixteen. I found that it got rid of my pimples while I was on the pills but that they came back after a few years, although not quite as serious. The acne on my face is definitely a lot better (pimples are smaller and don't scar) but I still get some large pimples on my back. I got arthritis after the courses (in my right knee after the first course, in my left knee after the second) but my dermatologist assured me this was not likely to be caused by the medication. I do think, however, that perhaps I was more suseptible to getting arthritis (genetics) and that the medication may have triggered it. I didn't find my mood affected at all while on Roaccutane, but I have a friend who took it in her early twenties who decided to stop half way through her six month treatment because it was making her feel down and lethargic. I wouldn't recommend Roaccutane to anyone who is prone to depression, but if you are generally a happy person then you should be fine. I found I could very easily get sunburnt (even in winter) and so I was careful to always wear sunscreen even on cloudy days. Overall I think the Roaccutane helped prevent some scarring and definitely improved the skin on my face long term (although I still have oily skin and a few small pimples). The effect wasn't as great for the acne on my back, but I still think the treatment was worth it.

Conclusions
I would recommend the product to people with really serious acne.
