I probably could have made a similar concoction myself but I was quite busy around the time I first purchased this product. It controls oil without using alcohol. My skin is oily on the T-zone and I rarely breakout so this has been the perfect product for my skin regimen. I can't really comment on whether the product controls blemishes because I rarely break out and the toner hasn't changed this. I Most of the Kiehl's products that I've tried have been above average -- I wish more companies would spend less on packaging and marketing and more on good ingredients as Kiehl's does. I like to keep things simple so I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, use this toner on my t-zone then finish with a night or day moisturizer. It was $24 so it cost more than any drugstore brand that's available, but it is definitely high quality and one could buy some tea tree oil and make a similar concoction that is just as effective.
