I've had rosacea for about 10 years and for the first 3 years or so could not find anything to stop the acne-like breakouts. Metrogel and oxytetracycline reduced the redness but once in a while I still got very bad breakouts. Since I've started on Retinova (tretinoin) I've not had a breakout. Furthermore, my skin did become a little bit smoother, but not so much to make it look completely normal. I use the cream once a day but over time its ability to keep my skin looking healthy has deteriorated. Nevertheless, since I've not had a breakout I conclude that it's very useful.

Conclusions
Would love to find an alternative that would better smooth my skin.
