Skin Care Tip: Sensitive to sunscreen?

submitted by Joann

First off, you need to be sure your sunscreen has one of the following active ingredients: avebenzone, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These block the UVA rays -- the primary cause of skin cancer and wrinkles. The UVB rays cause the sunburn. Look at the active ingredient list: avebenzone is more likely to cause a stinging sensation in sensitive skin. Try using a sunscreen that contains zinc or titanium dioxide instead. These tend to be thicker in consistency than the avebenzone sunscreens. They all provide excellent UVA coverage if applied liberally.

I use both types of sunscreen. I use the avebenzone based sunscreen everyday in my moisturizer, and the zinc oxide based sunscreen while outdoors playing tennis or swimming. Just be sure to reapply every 40 minutes when in the water or perspiring.
